According to the American Music Therapy Association, music therapy is when you work with a credentialed music therapist, engaging in music activities with the purpose of achieving goals that are specific to you. They go on to say that those music activities involve, “creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music,” and that music therapy can facilitate emotional expression.
The goals you might be looking to achieve can span the gamut. But I’ll share a few of what our clients are often looking to achieve:
- Decrease in anxiety
- Decrease in stress
- Improve self confidence/self esteem
- Improve or maintain their mental health
- Successfully make it through a major life transition (think: breakup, college, new job)
Here are some of our clients’ favorites music activities (therapists like to call them, “music interventions”).
- Sharing their favorite songs, listening to and talking about them.
- Finding resolve through writing an original song that tells a portion of your story
- Processing memories that are related to a certain song
- Releasing through vocalizing or singing (no experience required!)
- Finding relief through a music and imagery relaxation exercise
- Creating music with instruments (often for the first time)
